Tujia home cooking

Tujia home cooking draws on mountain produce, mushrooms, cured meats and traditional farm dishes. Ask about ingredients, spice levels and allergies before ordering.

Tujia cured pork and sausage are traditionally smoked over pine or cypress branches and air-dried. They are served at family celebrations and when welcoming guests.

Sanxiaguo, a signature Zhangjiajie dish, combines ingredients such as cured pork, pork intestine and tripe in a spicy dry-pot preparation rooted in Tujia mixed-dish traditions.

Other dishes in local cooking include dried bitter gourd stewed with small fish; hezha, made with soybean residue, greens and chilli; and shazhucai, a festive mixed pork dish that may contain fresh blood, liver and other offal.

Seasonal mushroom and cured-pork stew, loach with tofu, and stone-ear fungus with free-range chicken show other aspects of the local repertoire. Wild ingredients must come from lawful, safe sources; avoid unknown mushrooms and protected wildlife products.

Wulingyuan’s local product selection is organised around tea, kudzu, rice, wine, chicken, brocade, chilli and giant-salamander-related research. These reflect local agriculture and crafts rather than a list of required shopping stops.

Tea products include Wuling spring tea, Tianzi Mingcui, Tianmen black tea and local vine tea. Xiehe’s Xiang’amei product range includes kudzu starch, kiwifruit slices, dried fish and vine tea.

Yuquan tribute rice from Zhonghu is associated with a green-food production base, repeated green-food certification, municipal intangible heritage and a geographical-indication certification mark.

Wulingyuan drinks include sauce-aroma baijiu inspired by traditional brewing, craft beer, cultural-design drinks and wine. Alcohol is for adults; product availability and labelling should be checked locally.

Zhangjiajie white-feathered black-bone chicken is a local poultry breed recorded in the national livestock and poultry genetic-resource catalogue in 2024. Guaiyaomei Tujia brocade from Suoxiyu connects traditional weaving with clothing, bags, home accessories and cultural-design products; local records indicate more than 600 products and 131 patents.

Tianzi Mountain chopped chilli is a local seasoning associated with Grade A green-food certification. After a day among Wulingyuan’s peaks, stroll along the Suoxi River to see another side of the town. Illuminated riverside paths, fountains and reflections create a changing night-time setting.

The riverfront brings together walking routes, evening markets, food stalls and local-design souvenirs. Occasional drone shows may take place, but are not a nightly guarantee. Nearby folk-performance venues offer another evening option. Check events and opening arrangements for the day of your visit.

Opening hours, tickets, transport and visitor services may change. Check the latest official information before travelling.
