Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Guide

Last updated:

Quick answer

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the main starting point for Wulingyuan's sandstone peak scenery. Its six main visitor areas are Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie, Huangshizhai, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and Ten-mile Gallery. Plan around a connected entrance, summit or valley route rather than trying to see everything at once. Baofeng Lake, Yellow Dragon Cave, Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon have separate admission arrangements.

Detailed guide

Understand the six areas before choosing a route

Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie are a useful pairing for high panoramas and pillar views. Yangjiajie adds parallel sandstone walls. Huangshizhai offers an elevated tableland perspective, while Golden Whip Stream puts you beneath the peaks along a wooded valley. Ten-mile Gallery offers another valley experience on foot or by separately ticketed sightseeing tram. Choosing contrasting landscapes is more rewarding than treating the names as a completion checklist.

Choose the entrance for the day's route

The East Gate is Wujiayu, near Wulingyuan town. The South Gate is the Forest Park Ticket Station; the West Gate is Yangjiajie; the North Gate is Tianzi Mountain Ticket Station; and the Central, or Southeast, Gate is Zimugang. A gate and a same-named summit or cableway station are different places. Save the full entrance name and arrange transport to that location.

Separate summit and valley time

A starting summit circuit enters through the East Gate, ascends by Tianzi Mountain Cableway and moves towards Yuanjiajie using current park transfers before descending by Bailong Elevator. A second day can begin at the South Gate for Huangshizhai and a manageable Golden Whip Stream visit. These are planning sequences rather than walking tracks. The complete valley walk and a short return section have different effort and exit requirements.

Check what moves you between places

Admission, eco-friendly buses, cableways, the elevator and sightseeing tram are distinct parts of a visit. Read your product's inclusions and validity rather than assuming every vehicle is free or compulsory. Walking to an upper area instead of using transport can mean sustained steps and a demanding descent. Do not use a straight line on a map as evidence of a usable trail.

Make space for the landscape

Two full park days are a useful starting point, with more time for photography or longer walks. Keep viewpoints optional when queues or visibility change, and protect the last connection to your exit. Follow signed paths and staff instructions, keep away from barriers and do not feed wildlife. Wulingyuan's World Heritage landscape is a place to observe and protect, not a guarantee of a particular cloudscape.

Common mistakes

  • Navigating to Tianzi Mountain summit when your transfer is to the North Gate.
  • Treating a shuttle connection as a continuous walking trail.
  • Assuming the park ticket includes Baofeng Lake or Yellow Dragon Cave.

Local tips

  • Start with one summit pairing and one contrasting valley experience.
  • Write both entry and exit names on your daily plan.
  • Ask about the last connection before adding another area.

FAQ

Which area is best for the famous sandstone pillars?

Yuanjiajie is a strong starting point for pillar views and natural-bridge viewpoints. Tianzi Mountain provides a different, broader panorama; neither guarantees clear weather. See Yuanjiajie's landscape

Can I visit the valley without a long mountain climb?

Golden Whip Stream offers valley walking, but the full route still requires sustained effort. Choose a shorter return section if it better matches your group. Choose your valley walk

Where should I read complete park routes?

The detailed route chapter explains the five-gate options and alternative exits. Use it with the current park instructions, not as turn-by-turn navigation. Read the five-gate route options
